5 web design trends for 2022

Retro Typography

Retro typography can make website visitors feel nostalgic and sentimental. To headline their homepages, more and more businesses are using large, bold typography with a retro feel. This style is best suited for a single short word, with the rest of the page kept simple and clean.

This is a subset of a larger trend known as “Neue Nouveau.” Monotype describes Neue Nouveau as a twist on the Art Nouveau movement, which was characterized by decorative designs, embellished stroke endings, and diagonal and triangular character shapes, in its 2022 Type Trends Report. According to the report, we can see some of these same characteristics in typography today, such as organic forms and flourishes.

Using Typography for Hero Image

The hero image is the first part of a website that visitors see, must make a statement. With typography-led hero images, the web designers of 2022 are taking that idea to heart.

These hero sections essentially reduce or eliminate imagery entirely to allow the message to carry the weight of the first impression. These hero sections are bold in their simplicity rather than appearing bare. They captivate attention in the same way that a captivating news headline does. They also serve as an excellent showcase for some tasteful, creative lettering styles.

Minimalistic Text

We love this minimalistic approach because it ensures visitors only get the essential information. Some websites cut out images and prominent navigation elements altogether, relying on a couple of choice lines of straightforward text instead. Danish agency B14 utilizes the hero section of its website to simply explain its mission statement, for instance. It’s a modern, uncluttering approach to presenting information that contrasts sharply with its portfolio section, which employs cinemagraphs, hover effects, and an animated cursor.

Parallax Scrolling Effects

For years, parallax scroll effects have been popular in website design, and we expect to see more subtle and creative explorations of what can be accomplished with parallax in 2021.

Remember that too much motion in parallax effects may be harmful to people with vertigo because the illusion of depth can cause disorientation or dizziness. Here are a few guidelines we’ve seen more designers take into consideration to make sure they incorporate parallax as little as possible and without causing harm.

  1. Don’t allow parallax effects to distract you from important information.
  2. Don’t make it more difficult for the user to complete a critical task.
  3. Reduce the number of parallax effects as much as possible.
  4. Reduce the amount of parallax movement within each instance to a minimum.
  5. Limiting parallax effects to a small portion of the screen
  6. Include a toggle switch for users to disable parallax effects.

3d Web Design

3D technology has grown increasingly popular in recent years, and web design is not an exception. Although two-dimensional design still accounts for some share, the high usage of its 3D counterpart can’t be ignored and seems to thrive in subsequent years, due to the development of 3D-friendly technologies (Adobe Dimension CC, one of the top apps for designing mobile apps, or Figma, one of the best mobile app design tools). From three-dimensional colors that utilize gradient schemes and shading to make flat objects look 3D, the technology is used in creating illustrations and interactive content in either static or dynamic forms.

Even various online stores build 3D simulated products so that users can see how their products look in reality. Besides rendering them more responsive, 3D technology also encourages user participation in websites.
